For companies that own or manage retail stores in New York and employ 10 or more retail workers, there is a new compliance consideration to keep in mind. Starting June 2, 2025 (the March 4, 2025 starting date has been amended), the New York Retail Worker Safety Act (RWSA) takes effect.
The RWSA mandates that companies with retail stores in New York that sell consumer commodities at retail and employ 10 or more retail workers must have a workplace violence prevention policy, provide an annual workplace violence training program, and have an emergency plan for employees.
Additionally, companies with 500+ retail workers nationwide are required to implement emergency communication panic buttons by January 1, 2027.
