Becoming an Employer of Choice: Strategies and Tactics to Attract the Best Talent

Think about the companies that you would like to work for, and you may come up with names like Cisco, Adobe, or SAP.

These employers of choice didn’t get to be that way by accident. They made a conscious effort to build the type of workplace that attracts the best talent. Fortunately, becoming a highly attractive employer isn’t rocket science. It simply requires a set of principles and dedication to stick to those principles.

If your company is looking to become an employer of choice for the best talent on the market, consider the following strategies.

How To Become an Employer of Choice

Develop a Strong Culture

Companies that don’t intentionally try to build a strong culture run the risk of allowing a toxic culture to take over. A toxic culture not only makes it harder to attract the best talent, but it can also cost a company in terms of lost productivity and high turnover.

Company culture starts from the top down. If executive leadership doesn’t preach and exemplify principled behavior, there is little chance their teams will either. Company leaders need to uphold principles like honesty, transparency, and fairness.

For frontline employees, middle management is essentially the face of company leadership. Managers need to provide clear instructions and show trust in their staff members. Employees should feel confident enough to make a lot of decisions for themselves without having to get approval from a supervisor.

Company culture also exists at the lowest levels of a company. Leadership and management need to encourage positive interactions among employees. Staff members should not be overworked. There should be a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying and harassment.

Offer Attractive (Not Just Competitive) Pay

The old chestnut “you get what you pay for” is never truer than when talking about employee wages. Although money isn’t everything, especially when it comes to keeping top talent, it can get smart, knowledgeable people in the door. People will also work harder if they feel like they’re making more money than they would somewhere else.

Offer Flexibility

Even before the rise of remote work due to COVID-19, people tended to search for jobs that allowed them to maintain a healthy personal life. The pandemic has only heightened the importance of maintaining a strong work-life balance by finding a job with flexibility.

Office-based employees are likely to continue to expect to be able to work from home from time to time. Employees that cannot do their job over the internet can have their work-life balance supported through flexible start/end times, floating holidays, and paid parental leave.

Be Active on Social Media

The best talent on the market is on social media, especially LinkedIn, and companies trying to attract them need to meet them there.

Social media activity is often the domain of the marketing department, and while it’s always a good idea to promote goods and services, marketing also needs to promote the company as an employer. Building a strong ‘employer brand’ on social media can pay massive dividends when it’s time to hire new employees.
